What is The 12-Hour Walk?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re struggling to answer the question, “What’s my Everest”—because maybe you don’t have a specific vision or goal at the front of your mind right now—you can still use The 12-Hour Walk to cultivate a Possible Mindset, which will be highly beneficial in whatever you ultimately choose to pursue.

Use your 12-Hour Walk experience as an opportunity to ponder. In walking out the front door your intention can be, My Everest is to discover what my Everest is so I can live my best life pursuing it.

The short answer is no. The 12-Hour Walk is meant to meet you exactly where you’re at today. It’s not a race, and there’s no extra credit for going further or faster. Listen to your body and take as many breaks as needed throughout the day. It doesn’t matter if you walk one mile or fifty, as long as you set aside the full twelve hours and walk as much as you can while maintaining your silence.

Safety is of the utmost priority on the Walk. You know your area and your surroundings; make sure you plan for a pedestrian-friendly route, stay visible to motorists, and walk in areas where you feel safe by yourself.

A few safety basics:

  • Wear brightly colored clothing.
  • Bring a headlamp and spare batteries—depending on the season, your Walk might begin or end in the dark or dusk.
  • Bring your phone but keep it on airplane mode. Use it in case of emergency. Make sure you have your ICE (In Case of Emergency) number programmed into your contacts.
  • Tell a family member or friend your general planned route and projected return time.
  • Avoid highly trafficked roads with no shoulder. Sidewalks, public greenways, and trails are the safest options.
  • Walk in the opposite direction of traffic so you can see oncoming cars. In the U.S., walk on the left; in the UK, Australia, and other left-driving countries, walk on the right.

We recommend carrying a light backpack with the following:
  • Extra socks
  • Power bars or grab-and-go snacks
  • Water bottle(s) or a hydration backpack
  • Sweatshirt or light layers depending on the season
  • Small first aid kig
  • Sunscreen or sun protection
  • Cash and ID just in case
  • Light rain coat/ rain gear (check your forecast!)
  • Headlamp or flashlight

We highly recommend starting from your front door and walking near your home. It’s more grounding and will help you implement your Possible Mindset into your daily life.

That said, there are no set requirements regarding where you choose to walk. Rural settings are peaceful, but city noise and passing pedestrians can be a great “white noise” backdrop for solitude and silence. As long as you’re walking alone without actively engaging with others, you’re on track.

Just don’t wait for a vacation or perfect picturesque location—the important thing is to put your Walk on the calendar now.

Being alone with your thoughts and emotions is the “special sauce” that makes the 12-Hour Walk so transformational. We understand that walking with a friend or partner can be great for accountability; however, this walk must be completed alone.
Bring your phone with you; if you need to make an emergency call for help, you can do so right from the 12-Hour Walk app. You’ll also be able to access navigation and maps through the app if you get turned around or need directions.

Hi, I’m Colin O’Brady.

I’m a world record holding explorer, top speaker and New York Times bestselling author. Through all of my travels and accolades, my biggest life-changing experiences have come from simply walking by myself.

The idea for the 12-Hour Walk came during COVID quarantine in early 2020, at a point when I’d lost purpose and direction. I thought back to my 2010 solo walk across Antarctica; specifically, the mental marathon I accomplished during those 12-hour trekking days. I wanted to recapture the intense clarity and focus I felt as I walked alone for long stretches of time.

The next morning, I stepped right out of my front door with my phone on airplane mode and no destination in mind, and headed down the Oregon coast into the cold spring air. My thoughts ran free as the hours ticked by and I had no choice but to be with myself in silence. I dug deep into what was leaving me feeling unfulfilled and came to some important conclusions.

12 hours later, I came home a different person than when I'd left.

Being unplugged and untethered gave me the space to examine my limiting beliefs and reorient to living my best life.

The lesson? You don’t have to walk 932 miles across Antarctica to experience the transformative power of walking alone in silence.

Since that coastal walk, I’ve shared this experience with people all over the world; people of all ages, abilities, and circumstances. The one thing they all have in common is that they arrive at the finish line at a much better place than when they started.

If you need a boost to get unstuck, one walk will do it. Your best life awaits.
